Georgia Mann presents a FREE informal late-night music and poetry event featuring emerging UK talent. Tonight, hear poetry from Mark Grist and music from Op Sa! Balkan Band.
Mark Grist is an English teacher and award-winning poet and performer. Well-known for his viral YouTube videos and rap battles, as a broadcaster he has created work for BBC Radio 1, 2, and 6 Music, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, Film 4 and Google.
Mark has toured the UK as a spoken word artist and delivered masterclasses on creativity in Switzerland, New York and Singapore. His debut collection of poems Rogue Teacher was published last year. He is currently developing a TV series with Red Bull titled Mark Grist Battles the World, in which he’ll be exploring how hip hop culture and rap battles have transformed communities across the globe.
Bringing their own passionate brand of Balkan Gypsy music, Op Sa! Balkan Band are influenced by the roots of the Serbian Kolo and the Turkish Čoček, and their repertoire is an addictive blend of wild beats, gypsy flair and eastern melodies. They have performed at prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, alongside the London Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as being the featured headliner at the Lancaster Music Festival 2015.
Listeners can look forward to music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and the Romani culture, with a growing number of original compositions and arrangements incorporating jazz and rock influences. Combining a traditional brass section with an electric guitar and drum kit, Op Sa! bring a contemporary twist to their deep-rooted cultural influences, creating an unmistakably rich sound in the process.
This is a FREE but ticketed event. Advance tickets are now sold out but tickets will also be available on the door.
