To celebrate the arrival of Raiders of the Lost Ark Live at the Royal Albert Hall, expert Dr Debbie Challis will uncover the ‘real’ archaeologists behind Indiana Jones in a special talk in the Hall’s Gallery.
This talk explores how myths and bizarre beliefs influenced the early years of archaeology, even that of renown Egyptian archaeologist William Matthew Flinders Petrie. Along the way, we’ll encounter the ‘Pyramid Inch’, lost cities and iconic artefacts. We’ll also explore the creation of celebrity archaeologists such as Austen Henry Layard, Heinrich Schliemann and Flinders Petrie.
Dr Debbie Challis is Public Programmer at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, UCL and has written widely on the history of archaeology, museums and constructions of race in interpreting the past.
