BBC Proms 2019: Highlights from week two
Week two of the BBC Proms started on Friday 26 July with a celebration of the sound of 1969 with Prom 11. Then, on Saturday 27 July, the UK’s most talented musicians aged from 13 to 18 brought their explosive energy and enthusiasm for Prom 12: National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
Prom 14 on the Monday marked the return of Haydn’s colourful oratorio The Creation to the Proms for the first time in a decade. One of Europe’s greatest orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, also returned to the Proms under Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin for the first of two concerts this season (Proms 15 and 17).
On Tuesday, the undisputed queen of African music Angélique Kidjo made her Proms debut in a late-night tribute to celebrated salsa songstress Celia Cruz that had the whole Auditorium on their feet within minutes.
Thursday’s Prom 18 saw soloists Claudia Mahnke and Stuart Skelton as well as Norwegian pianist and Proms regular Leif Ove Andsnes celebrate the music of Britten and Mahler with the help of the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner.
