reflection- Explorers of the Solar System

Sunday 4 October 2009 - 5:00 PM

Explorers of the Universe

To complement this month’s reflect exhibition, there will be a talk by Professor John Zarnecki, a leading figure in astronomy. Entitled Explorers of the Solar System, he will give us an engaging and personal account of his experiences exploring the far reaches of the Solar System. This will be followed by a private view of the exhibition.

Tickets are £6.50 which include a glass of wine. It is also possible to add a short tour of the building at 4.30pm at an additional cost of £3.50.

To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy and as part of the Hall’s reflect series, Explorers of the Universe is a selection of photographs by Max Alexander, portraying all aspects of astronomy in the UK.

Through interpretive and character portraits, Max introduces us to astronomers at the forefront of our understanding of the cosmos. This is complemented by reportage photography of professional and amateur astronomy. These photographs range from academic research and observation through to the stargazing public, capturing the truly amazing journey of discovery on which both scientists and the public are travelling.

Max Alexander is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and has had a lifelong interest in astronomy. In the course of taking these photographs across the UK, he has got to know very well the community of astronomers, in one of the few sciences where amateurs make a valuable contribution.
