RECENT EVENTS - Fugata Quintet

Sunday 7 April 2013 - 7:00 PM

Fugata Quintet | Royal Albert Hall

Inspired by the ethnic melting pot of Astor Piazzolla’s Buenos Aires, the Fugata Quintet brings its classical character and dazzling technique to Nuevo Tango. With diverse backgrounds in jazz and world music, the five performers create a distinguished and passionate sound that has been heard in festivals and concert halls from Greece to the UK.

Formed in 2007 by graduates of the Royal Academy of Music in London, the ensemble was named after the second movement of Piazzolla’s Tangata Suite “Silfo y Ondina”. Paying tribute to the composer’s original quintet and influenced by his classical origins, the group has a distinctive instrumentation that incorporates percussive effects, with provide the rhythmic heart of Nuevo Tango. All outstanding musicians in their own right, Zivorad Nikolic (accordion), Anastasios Mavroudis (violin), Antonis Hatzinikolaou (guitar), Anahit Chaushyan (piano) and James Opstad (double bass) combine their unique musical personalities to create an enormous range of possibilities for expression.

This concert will feature the premiere of a new piece of music written especially for the group by Michael Csanyi-Wills.
