Donald Runnicles conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Vadim Repin in James MacMillan's Violin Concerto.
Written for Repin's big-boned Russian sound and premiered in 2010, the concerto is threaded through with allusions to the traditional fiddle music and Scottish laments that MacMillan regards as the 'ancient modes of expression and storytelling'.
The concentrated drama of Beethoven's 1807 'Coriolan' overture acts as an up-beat to his Fifth Symphony, its opening four-note motif as arresting today as it was in 1808.
