Counterpoint Art: Science
Monday 9 June - Sunday 13 July 2008
Explore the breathtaking and curious world of Science Photo Library in 'Counterpoint'. In musical terms 'counterpoint' stands for the relationship between two or more voices that are independent in contour and rhythm and interdependent in harmony. This exhibition explores counterpoint from a visual perspective, using pairs of images and a scientific language instead of a musical one.
Throughout history, science and the arts have always been closely linked and a dip into the collection of this leading specialist picture library reminds us how science can create its own art.
The exhibition takes place around our ground floor corridor. You can view it when attending performances or by calling in on one of the following free open days:
Saturday 28 June 10am - 2pm
Sunday 29 June 10am - 2pm
Saturday 5 July 10am - 2pm
Free Entry. Enter through Door 1.
On Monday 9 June, Gary Evans will give a talk to complement this month’s reflect exhibition. He will discuss how science has found its new popular voice and you will then have a private view of the exhibition. To book and for more information, please see the link below.

Scopic
Friday 9 May - Thursday 29 May 2008
What has staring down a microscope to do with stargazing? Surely, cell biology and astronomy are about as far removed as you can get in time and space. Light from stars takes millions of year to reach our eyes on earth. What we see through the telescope is already history. Down a microscope we can look inside here and now, at cells that are measured in millionths of millimeters and events that happened milliseconds ago. Yet our inner and outer worlds can look uncannily similar…
Scopic aims to engage young minds in Science using the Arts. As part of the Royal Albert Hall Education and in collaboration with the Medical Research Council’s Clinical Sciences Centre, The Epigenome Network of Excellence and Durham University, pupils from eleven primary and secondary schools have been challenged to create a ‘partner’ for a microscopic or telescopic image, using a variety of different art materials.
The exhibition takes place around our ground floor corridor. You can view it when attending performances or by calling in on one of the following free open days:
Sunday 18 May 10am - 4pm
Wednesday 28 May 10am - 2pm
Free Entry. Enter through Door 1.
Presented by the Royal Albert Hall in association with the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre and Durham University.

The exhibition will show images of artists such as The Who, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Coldplay, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand and the cream of British comedy including Ricky Gervais, Peter Kay and Russell Brand.
