Wayne Marshall showcases his unique talent on the magnificent Royal Albert Hall Organ – Wednesday 21 October at 7.45pm

17 June, 2009

Wayne Marshall, critically acclaimed organist and one of the brightest lights on the classical music scene, will perform a thrilling programme on the magnificent Royal Albert Hall Organ on Wednesday 21 October.

Marshall is considered one of the most distinguished organists of his generation and has swiftly established an international reputation as organist and pianist. As an organ soloist he draws on an exceptionally large and varied repertoire, particularly favouring the French romantics, and has appeared in recitals through the UK, Europe, North America and the Far East. He has recorded for many high profile labels including EMI Classics and Virgin Classics and at present, is organist- in residence of Manchester's Bridgewater Hall.

In recognition of his work, he had been awarded with BBC Music Magazine's 'Artist of the Year' Award in 1998 and in 2004 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Bournemouth University in recognition of his many superb collaborations with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. His performances are known for their artistic flair, innovative style and 'technical brilliance with unbelievable feats of virtuosity'.

The recital features a programme of virtuoso works highlighting his passion for the French romantics including Widor's famous Symphony No.6 and Dupré's Allegro Deciso. These pieces are supplemented by his own arrangement of Bernstein's Wonderful Town plus other arrangements of works by Strauss, Verdi and Tchaikovsky.

The Royal Albert Hall's Willis organ was originally built to be one of the finest, largest and tonally most comprehensive instruments in the world and, following a complete refurbishment, it has reclaimed its position as the largest in the UK with 9,999 pipes. This magnificent instrument is now restored to a condition that will ensure its enjoyment for many generations to come.
