Join The Wonderful World of Captain Beaky and His Band for a festive treat for the whole family in aid of UNICEF
Royal Albert Hall – Sunday 11 December 2011, 6pm

Join Timid Toad, Reckless Rat, Artful Owl and Batty Bat for a festive evening with surprise special guests in aid of UNICEF at The Wonderful World of Captain Beaky and His Band on Sunday 11 December at the Royal Albert Hall.

Captain Beaky & His Band is the cover title of two fantastic albums of poetry by Jeremy Lloyd, set to music by Jim Parker and recited by British celebrities. First released in 1977, a generation of children and parents enjoyed the adventures of Timid Toad, Reckless Rat and many more through radio, TV shows and a West End Musical as well as performances by New York City Ballet.

Now the Royal Albert Hall presents a nostalgic, festive treat that revisits these classic poems whilst also introducing them to an entirely new generation. Introduced by Sir Roger Moore KBE, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and directed by Hugh Wooldridge, the evening features a host of special celebrity guests recounting these magical poems with musical interludes and performances.

This event is part of the Hall’s commitment in providing new and innovative programming and creating visitor experiences that can be enjoyed by all ages. As a charity, the Hall is committed in making the venue accessible to all and supporting other charitable purposes.

Jasper Hope, Chief Operating Officer at the Royal Albert Hall, said ‘I am delighted to be bringing Captain Beaky back for this very special concert at the Royal Albert Hall. A whole generation was captivated by these magical poems and now we are able to revisit and present this wonderful world to an entirely new audience whilst also supporting a great charitable cause’.

Joanna Lumley, one of the artists on the night, said, ‘I have always loved the Captain Beaky poems: they are funny and touching and quite beautiful to read aloud. Children and grown-ups alike are drawn in by their charm and humour. It's no wonder that they are so popular; they have inspired ballet and music, both included in this stonkingly fabulous show which will benefit children the world over. I am excited to be part of this thrilling programme, a perfect Christmas treat for the whole family’

Jeremy Lloyd said ‘Captain Beaky and His Band are just as young as the day I wrote them – I wish I was!’

Royal Albert Hall

The Royal Albert Hall is the world’s most famous stage. Its breathtaking auditorium hosts over 370 shows a year by the world’s greatest artists. The magical atmosphere combined with inspired artists creates legendary events.  Opened in 1871 as part of Prince Albert’s vision for a centre for the Arts and Sciences, and a registered charity operating without public funding, it remains true to his founding ambitions within a modern context.

Extending the brand with over 120 events outside the auditorium, the Hall has broadened its appeal to younger, diverse audiences whilst still engaging its existing customers. It also works extensively with schools and young people through its Learning and Participation programme, reaching over 30,000 participants each year.
