- Showtime can also help teachers address the PLTS framework.
As a resource, Showtime is adaptable to suit specific needs and skill sets within the classroom and can be packaged for teachers to incorporate different levels of ability and learning. It suits one to one and progressive learning so that it adjusts to the pace of specific learners and gives students the opportunity to work at their own speed, rather than struggle in a group environment.
It can also be accessed outside the classroom. It specifically suits those individuals who are home educated or spend a lot of time away from their educational establishment. It has proved in evaluation to have motivated disaffected learners.
For Students
Showtime consists of a series of short films featuring members of the Hall’s staff carrying out their jobs. The resource covers a wide cross section of jobs including management roles, marketing, ticket sales, lighting, sound, make-up and costume to give students a wide cross section to work with as well as showing how different departments communicate with each other with the purpose of putting on a show or event at the Royal Albert Hall. No actors have been used in this process, therefore accurately reflecting the actual work of the Royal Albert Hall and the people who work here.
At key points students are set a series of tasks to complete, learners progress is rewarded throughout on successful completion - e.g. once students have completed the “lighting the stage” activity successfully, the stage lights up and the music starts to play.
Hall staff featured in the videos are constantly engaging with the students, whether it be to provide positive feedback once they have completed an activity successfully or pointing out the consequences of not completing the activity in the correct way.
For Teachers and Home Educators
Showtime has been designed with teachers in mind as it can be adapted to suit group and individual needs. The teacher guidance materials provide clarity in explaining how the resource is intended to be used to support learning in a variety of methods. This includes self-directed study and classroom activities as well as opportunities for group or paired work. This guidance is provided for each activity within each section of Showtime which clearly maps the activity to the Functional Skills requirements. There are even suggestions given throughout each section where the use of interactive whiteboards or plasma screens would enhance the learning.
Another benefit of Showtime is that it can be integrated with most learning platforms and VLEs so that students can access the resource via the school or college learning environment outside the classroom at any time.
